Needle Felting

I took my first needle felting class at Home Ec in Silverlake. Jenny taught the class and she was fabulous. I was amazed I took to it like a duck to water. I always wanted to try it but for some reason in my mind I thought it would be difficult. Jenny showed us how fun and easy it was to felt.

So here is my first project. I adore him!

Challenge #3 Robots!

So finally I have made a knitted robot. I have had him in my head for a while. It's nice to finally bring him to life.

Last Week's Challenge: Red

Red is a difficult color for me. It's very bold and in your face. I love attention but red is a "look at me" kinda color I have never been comfortable with. I created these stockings and I love them. The touch of turquoise gives it that extra punch!

ArtWork Play
Challenge #3
Monday, March 22nd, 2010:

Subject: Robots!
Materials: Whatever strikes your fancy!

I, Candy, throw down this challenge. Robots and Monsters are my favorite subjects. I am trying to create more characters to draw and knit. This should get the juices flowing!

Guidelines of Challenge:
1) The challenge will include a subject and materials.
2) Each challenge should be simple enough to execute in an hour or less.
3) It should not involve spending much money…ideally we would be able to use things we already have at home.
4) The challenges will be posted every Monday…however, you may jump in anytime.
5) We will have a pick of the week. If your entry gets chosen, we will feature you and your work. Good luck!

My results for challenge #2

Challenge #2 Results: Candy

Here is my red inspired art piece. Hand sew border of handmade paper on 5×5 canvas. Ink drawing of my monster with definition of monster in the background. I love monsters and this guy turned out pretty cute! –Candy

Challenge #2

ArtWork Play
Challenge #2
Monday, March 15th, 2010:

Subject: Red plus one
Materials: Whatever strikes your fancy!

Deb chose this challenge because it features her favorite color…red! So the idea is to create something using shades of red as the main color (or colors), then add some punch to it with one other color. This can be jewelry, fabric, painting…heck, you can dye your pet’s hair red if you want! Have fun…

Good luck!

Challenge 1 Results

So here it is! My bug with paint challenge entry. It is a mixed media collage with fabric and handmade paper on recycled plaque. I layered and hand sewed the handmade paper onto the fabric.

The praying mantis is my favorite insect. I loved this challenge. I tried to push myself to experiment with my favorite materials.

Challenge No. 1

ArtWork Play
Challenge #1
Monday, March 1st, 2010:

Subject: bug
Materials: paint

Remember this is just a starting point. You can take the challenge literally or figuratively. Paint a bug, collage a bug painting a picture, photograph a bug stuck in wet paint, etc. We don’t recommend applying paint to actual bugs, however…they don’t make great models…too twitchy.

Good luck!

About the challengers

Candy and Deborah have known each other for most of their lives, and they are inspired by each other’s creative endeavors. They live about 2000 miles apart and have been known to talk on the phone for 4-5 hours at a time. They both love sunny weather, fuzzy animals, board games, and traveling to faraway places.

Deborah Patterson lives in Nashville and shares her house with a wonderful roommate and a temperamental-but-cuddly Himalayan cat. She took a job in the late 90’s as an artist for an upscale children’s shop and fell in love with designing and painting whimsical images for kids. She now runs a small business from her home, dreaming up new things to paint and personalize. Her focus is on pieces for children’s rooms, such as canvas wall art, furniture, and room décor items. She has also painted colorful murals on the walls of private residences, model homes, and businesses. Other creative activities include making jewelry, cooking, writing, singing, and playing piano.

Her art can be viewed at her website, www.achildsdelightbydebbie.com , as well as Etsy at www.etsy.com/shop/AChildsDelight. She can be reached by email at nashdlp[at]aol dot com.
